چکیده
Deductive question-answering systems generally evaluate queries under one of two possible assumptions which we in this paper refer to as the open and closed world assumptions. The open world assumption corresponds to the usual first order approach to query evaluation: Given a data base DB and a query Q, the only answers to Q are those which obtain from proofs of Q given DB as hypotheses. Under the closed world assumption, certain answers are admitted as a result of failure to find a proof. More specifically, if no proof of a positive ground literal exists, then the negation of that literal is assumed true. In this paper, we show that closed world evaluation of an arbitrary query may be reduced to open world evaluation of socalled atomic queries. We then show that the closed world assumption can lead to inconsistencies, but for Horn data bases no such inconsistencies can arise. Finally, we show how for Horn data bases under the closed world assumption purely negative clauses are irrelevant for deductive retrieval and function instead as integrity constraints.

Profiling the Potential of Web Tables for Augmenting Cross-domain Knowledge Bases
Cross-domain knowledge bases such as DBpedia, YAGO, or the Google Knowledge Graph have gained increasing attention over the last years and are starting to be deployed within various use cases. However, the content of such knowledge bases is far from being complete, far from always being correct, and suffers from deprecation (i.e. population numbers become outdated after some time). Hence, there...
متن کاملNormative Systems require Hybrid Knowledge Bases ( Extended Abstract )
In this extended abstract we borrow an example from the Portuguese Penal Code to advocate that norms used to regulate interaction in human societies, just as those used in multi-agent systems, require the joint use of the features based on the Closed World Assumption of rules in Logic Programming and those based on the Open World Assumption of ontologies in Description Logics, all of which are ...

متن کاملTwo Approaches to Efficient Open-world Reasoning
We show how a simple but e cient evaluation procedure that is logically correct only for closed world knowledge bases can nonetheless be used in certain contexts with open world ones We discuss two cases one based on restricting queries to be in a certain normal form and the other arising in reasoning about actions based on having sensing information at the right time so as to dynamically reduc...
متن کاملMinimal Models for Closed World Data Bases
This paper investigates a consistent version cwaS Reiter’s closed world assumption cwa. It proves (cf. theorem 4.11) that for purely relational languages cwaS is ∀-complete with respect to minimal semantics, i.e. for every ∀-sentence φ and for every ∀-theory Σ, φ ∈ cwaS(Σ) iff Σ `min φ. Moreover, it relates cwaS to other known syntactic characterization of minimal semantics: Minker’s GCWA.
